Rauvolfia serpentina (Scientific name: Rauvolfia serpentina (L.) Benth. ex Kurz) is a plant of the oleander family and the genus Rauvolfia. Distributed in China, India, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Thailand, Indonesia and the islands of Oceania. It is distributed in southern Yunnan in China; it is cultivated in Guangxi and Guangdong provinces. Snake root wood has a wide range of adaptation to temperature. It can survive at 0-43 °C, and can withstand short-term freezing. The suitable temperature for growth is 20-30 °C. It can grow in areas with an annual rainfall of 1000-2500 mm. The root of Snake Root contains more than 28 alkaloids such as reserpine and Xuepingding, with a total content of 0.5-2%. It is the main raw material for the treatment of hypertension. Chinese folk use the roots, stem bark, and leaves as antipyretic, anti-epilepsy, insect, snake bite and other medicines.
