What Is Rhodiola Rosea?

Rhodiola Rosea generally grows in alpine regions. Plants have a long growing period and yields are very limited. Excessive exploitation has caused serious damage to the ecological environment. Artificial planting of Rhodiola rosea is very difficult and the success rate is very low. At present, the demand for Rhodiola rosea extract in the global market is continuously increasing, and the supply of Rhodiola raw materials has been in short supply.

There are more than 90 species of Rhodiola around the world, mainly in the Himalayas, North Korea, Japan, and parts of North America. China is the main producing area of Rhodiola. More than 70 varieties have been found in China. Rhodiola species commonly used in Korea and Japan are Rhodiola rosea L., Rhodiola Sachalinensis A. Bor, and Rhodiola Crenulata H. Ohba. Rhodiola Rosea is used primarily in the United States and Europe. At present, Rhodiola Crenulata is used more in China, which is mainly produced in high-altitude areas such as Tibet, Qinghai and Sichuan. Rhodiola Rosea is made primarily in Xinjiang in China. The main active ingredients contained in Rhodiola Rosea are total Rosavide, salidroside and tyrosol. Rhodiola Crenulata only has salidroside and tyrosol, and does not contain total Rosavide. So its efficacy is weaker than that of Rhodiola Rosea.

Rhodiola Rosea contains special active ingredients Rosavin, Rosarin and Rosin (collectively known as Rosavins). Extensive experimental evidence shows that Rosavins are only present in Rhodiola Rosea and have been identified as a sign of genetically pure Rhodiola and Rhodiola Extract Powder.

Medicinal History of Rhodiola Rosea

Rhodiola Rosea was named by the Greek botanist Linnaeus, named after the freshly cut rhizomes that can release a rose-like fragrance. It was first included in the book "De Materia Medica". For centuries, Rhodiola rosea has been a traditional medicine in Russia and Scandinavian countries.

In 1969, Rhodiola rosea was listed as a legal drug in the former Soviet Union. The Pharmacology and Pharmacopoeia Committee of the Ministry of Health of the former Soviet Union approved the use of Rhodiola rosea extract for medicine.

In 1975, the 40% ethanolic extract of Rhodiola rosea, code-named 75/933/14, was approved for mass production as a medicinal product. The drug insert describes that the drug is a debilitating (fatigue) stimulant, used to treat various infectious diseases, mental and neurological diseases, and can reduce fatigue, enhance memory, focus and improve work efficiency in healthy people.

In 1985, the Swedish government officially recognized Rhodiola rosea as an anti-fatigue botanical, and included it in the book "Textbook for Phytomedieine Pharmacist" for training pharmacists. The book describes the medicinal properties of Rhodiola rosea with stimulant effects. In addition, the book "Pharmaeeutieal Book" also states that Rhodiola rosea is one of the most commonly used stimulants in officially registered herbal products. In Denmark, Rhodiola rosea is also registered as a botanical and is widely used as a stimulant and tonic to improve the efficiency of mental work under stress.
