Unveiling the Mystery of Berberine Hydrochloride

Berberine hydrochloride is an alkaloid, a yellow fine powder extracted from plants of the Ranunculaceae family native to North America. Also known as berberine hydrochloride or simply berberine, it is derived from plants such as Coptis chinensis, Phellodendron amurense, and Berberis. As a natural isoquinoline quaternary ammonium alkaloid extracted from Ranunculaceae plants, it can also be obtained through artificial synthesis.

Efficacy and Functions

1.Medical studies have shown that berberine hydrochloride is relatively more toxic when administered by injection compared with other routes. However, when taken orally, it can be used to treat various fungal and parasitic infections and has an antidiarrheal effect.

2.Continuous scientific research has revealed that berberine hydrochloride exerts diverse pharmacological effects in other aspects, including metabolic regulation (assisting in lowering blood glucose and blood lipids), anti‑inflammatory, antioxidant, and antitumor activities.

Applications

1. In daily life, dryness and excessive liver fire in the human body during spring and autumn easily lead to oral diseases such as oral ulcers. Topical gel medicines containing berberine can relieve local ulcer pain and exert positive effects in reducing redness, swelling, exudation, and ulcer area.

2. Diabetes, a common metabolic disorder, can be mildly managed in some patients through oral administration of berberine, which helps slightly

3. The prevalence of hypertension is increasing year by year. In hypertensive patients, oral administration of 0.9 grams of berberine daily combined with the antihypertensive drug amlodipine results in better blood pressure‑lowering effects than amlodipine alone.

New Directions in Medical Applications

1. Further clinical research by experts and scholars has shown that improvements in the formulation technology of this commonly used natural medicine, such as nanoparticle delivery systems, have effectively overcome the bottleneck of low oral bioavailability, opening up new prospects for expanded clinical applications.

2. Clinical trials continue to expand the medical applications of berberine hydrochloride. For polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), a hormonal disorder characterized by enlarged ovaries with cysts, oral berberine may help lower blood glucose, improve cholesterol and triglyceride levels, reduce testosterone levels, and decrease the waist‑hip ratio in PCOS patients.
