In the existing health care products and supplements for improving sleep, the selection of raw materials is relatively concentrated, and about 1/3 of the products use melatonin. Supplementing melatonin in time can improve sleep.
Melatonin for Sleep
It is an endogenous hormone produced by the pineal gland. Melatonin is involved in the regulation of human sleep, wake cycles and circadian rhythms. It is mainly used to improve sleep disturbances caused by insufficient melatonin secretion or circadian rhythm disorders.
However, the effect of melatonin on secondary sleep disorders caused by psychological factors such as stress is not obvious. Melatonin is an endocrine hormone in the body. Long-term supplementation of exogenous melatonin may reflexively cause the dysfunction of melatonin synthesis and secretion in the body, resulting in the disappearance of circadian rhythm and sleep disturbance.
Melatonin International Use Areas
Internationally, different countries and regions have different standards and regulations for the use of melatonin.
In the United States, melatonin is permitted as a dietary supplement ingredient and does not require government permission for marketing.
In the European Union, melatonin is banned as a food ingredient.
In Canada, melatonin is permitted as an ingredient in natural health products, and the recommended daily dose for adults is 0.5 to 10 mg.
Only a few countries, including Australia, list melatonin as a drug.
In China, melatonin is allowed to be used as a raw material for health food. The purity is required to be more than 99.5%. The recommended daily dose is 1-3 mg, and the declared health function is limited to improving sleep. And especially emphasize two points: it can not replace the role of drug treatment; do not use it before driving, before or during mechanical work, and those who are engaged in dangerous operations.
Who Should Not Take Melatonin?
Not everyone can take health food containing melatonin.
1. Adolescents have a lot of pineal hormone secretion in their bodies. If they retake melatonin, it will easily lead to excessive physical development and precocious puberty.
2. Pregnant and lactating women, patients with lupus erythematosus and depression, as well as those who drive, operate machinery and engage in dangerous operations should not take this type of health food.
