Ectoine powder is a new type of water-soluble zwitterionic amino acid derivative derived from a high salt-loving bacterium in the Uyuni salt flat, Bolivia's "Mirror of the Sky". It is a natural and effective active ingredient in cosmetics with a wide range of cellular protective functions.

Also known as "salt-tolerant bacterial extract", ectoine protects salt-loving bacteria from damage under extreme conditions of high salt, high temperature, and high UV radiation.

The "bacterial milking" process involves subjecting salt-loving bacterial strains to osmotic pressure stimulation using different concentrations of salt culture medium, causing them to release a large amount of accumulated ectoine from within the cells. Subsequently, techniques such as filtration and crystallization are employed to further purify and obtain ectoine.

Ectoine can effectively enhance the immune protection of skin cells, increase cell repair function, and enable the skin to effectively resist the invasion of microorganisms and allergens.

Moreover, ectoine can protect the DNA of human skin cells from damage caused by UV-A radiation, preventing DNA strand breaks caused by ionizing electronic radiation.

2. Moisturizing

Ectoine powder is not easily prone to interaction with biomacromolecules and is "preferentially excluded" from them, thus forming a hydration layer between ectoine and biomacromolecules. Additionally, due to its strong water retention function, ectoine further forms a thicker hydration layer around biomacromolecules. 4. Soothing and anti-inflammatory

Some studies have investigated the inhibitory effects of ectoine (EC), madecassoside (MC), and the combination of ectoine and madecassoside at concentrations of 20, 10, and 5 μg/mL on the production of nitric oxide (NO) induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in RAW264.7 cells (a mouse monocyte/macrophage cell line). Ectoine and madecassoside have shown potential anti-inflammatory properties and can effectively inhibit the production of NO, which is associated with inflammation. The combination of ectoine and madecassoside may have a synergistic effect in reducing inflammation and promoting soothing effects.

Results: Compared with the blank group, the model group showed a significant increase in NO content in RAW264.7 cells after LPS stimulation. Compared with the model group, at the set mass concentrations, ectoine and madecassoside significantly reduced the expression of NO content in the cells, demonstrating that ectoine and madecassoside have a significant inhibitory effect on NO production induced by LPS in RAW264.7 cells, indicating a certain anti-inflammatory activity.

5. Inhibition of tyrosinase activity

Researchers from Qinghai University studied the inhibitory effects of different mass fractions of icariin and its combination with whitening agents on tyrosinase, and used enzymatic kinetics to explore the types of inhibitory effects of icariin on tyrosinase.

Results : The inhibition rate of tyrosinase activity increased with the increasing concentration of ectoine, and the average inhibition rate was 36.33% when the concentration of ectoine was 2.0%. When the concentration of ectoine exceeded 2.0%, the trend of inhibition rate increase became flat. The calculated half-inhibition concentration (IC50) was 4.58 g/L. This indicates that ectoine can inhibit tyrosinase activity and reduce the biosynthesis of melanin, thereby potentially possessing whitening effects.

6. Long-term moisturizing, reducing wrinkles

Ectoine powder can prevent dehydration and death of halophilic bacteria in high-salt environments because it is an important substance for maintaining osmotic balance. Its unique molecular structure gives it a strong ability to complex with water molecules, which can structure the free water inside the cells.
